Lomé, July 15th 2024 – Star Garments Group (Star), a global leader in sustainable garment manufacturing, has unveiled plans to establish a state-of-the-art garment export manufacturing facility in Togo, marking its first venture outside Sri Lanka. The initiative, supported by a $15 million financial package from the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, aims to strengthen Togo’s textile and apparel sector while creating significant economic opportunities in the region.

The new facility will be located in the Plateforme Industrielle d’Adétikopé near Lomé, Togo’s capital, and is expected to generate around 4,520 direct and indirect jobs by 2030. The initiative is specifically aimed at empowering women through employment opportunities, thereby contributing to the socio-economic development of the local community.

Star Garments Group Managing Director A. Sukumaran enthusiastically said, “We are continually looking to diversify our manufacturing base, and our future facility in Togo will serve as a competitive alternative for our valued customers. This expansion is part of our strategic vision to drive global growth and introduce world-class garment manufacturing to the West African region.”

Star Garments Group, renowned for its four decades of experience in the Sri Lankan garment industry, is committed to sustainability and innovation. Eight of its factories are LEED certified, including the world’s first passive factory building. The new factory in Togo will also be built to LEED standards, reinforcing Star’s commitment to environmental management. Notably, the group is the only conglomerate in the apparel industry to be certified carbon neutral for all its operations.

IFC’s $15 million investment underlines a partnership to promote private sector development in emerging markets. The funding includes a $7.5 million contribution from IFC’s own funds and a matching loan from the International Development Association’s Private Sector Finance Fund.
Star Garments Group’s expansion into Togo represents a significant step in its global growth strategy, strengthening its ability to meet the evolving needs of the international garment market while contributing to sustainable development goals in West Africa.
